RCMP are reminding P.E.I. motorists that it's time to get those studded winter tires off their vehicles.

The deadline to remove the studded tires was May 31.

Anyone caught with the studded tires still on can face a $100-fine and a $75-victim fine surcharge for a total of $175.

RCMP Queens District Commander Staff Sgt. Mark Crowther said studded tires have been shown to cause significant damage to pavement.

He added they create ruts which fill with ice and water, creating spray and hydroplaning. They also remove pavement markings.

RCMP and provincial highway safety enforcement officers will be monitoring for compliance throughout the month of June.
