Teachers at government-sponsored daycares on P.E.I. are getting their first wage increase since the system was set up in 2010.

The government announced on Thursday a two per cent wage increase for early years centres teachers, which it says represents an investment of $300,000. The pay hike will go to 300 teachers in 44 different centres starting in July.

"Nearly 2,000 children are enrolled in early years centres, so this investment directly impacts Island families across the province," said SonyaHooper, executive director of theEarly Childhood Development Association of P.E.I.,in a news release.

Early years centres are jointly funded by government and parents' fees. Government said parent fees will not be affected by the pay increase.
