Enactus UPEI students showcase Kenya project at competition

A team of 10 students from Enactus UPEI is heading to Toronto for a national competition this weekend to show off their business development project in Kenya.

Enactus is an international organization that encourages university students to promote economic, social and environment health through entrepreneurial action. The group holds an annual competition in Canada judged by CEOs and top business executives.

This year, Enactus UPEI is presenting four projects, including one with an international connection. The group is working with a women's organization in Unity, Kenya that makes and sells jewellery.

"We're a bunch of university students, a lot are from the business faculty," Enactus UPEI member Ronnie McPhee told CBC News.

"Our business student are taking what they've learned in their education and are applying that to them, so they can use things like the computer and online and increase their sales."

McPhee said they've sent a lap top computer to Unity, and are working with a local person who can help maintain it.

The other projects the group will present on include Treeternity, a tree planting initiative; Engine Education, a vehicle maintenance workshop; and Financially Fit, helping high school students learn about managing money.
