A cabin used to store picnic tables and sports equipment at Camp Gencheff in Stratford, P.E.I., was heavily damaged in a fire early Thursday morning.

The Cross Roads Fire Department arrived shortly after midnight to find the building nearly burned to the ground. Fire Chief Ron Young said it took 90 minutes to put the fire out.

Board chair Jennifer Lawton said the loss is disappointing, but luckily no one was hurt.

"You can't replace lives or, you know, someone who was injured. So to me, that was key," Lawton said. "It is devastating."

The camp, which provides a recreational program for individuals with special needs, is a non-profit organization and funding is limited.

"We'll just have to evaluate as a board next month and come up with ... a plan," Lawton said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Camp Gencheff has been in operation for 55 years.
