Fox Meadow Golf Course hosts 2016 Atlantic Golf Championship

The 2016 Atlantic Golf Championship is being played at the Fox Meadow Golf Course in Stratford, P.E.I. over the weekend.

72 golfers are playing for the team championship and individual wins

The 2016 Atlantic Golf Championship is being played at theFox Meadow Golf Course in Stratford, P.E.I. over the weekend.

While it isthe third year for the regional tournament that brings together some of the best amateur golfers in Atlantic Canada, it's the first time the regional tournament is being played on the Island.

Ron McNeill, executive director of P.E.I. Golf Association said each province sendsa team of up to 20 players in six differentcategories men, women, mid-amateur men, mid-amateurwomen, seniormen and senior women.

"We have a field of 72 this morning," McNeillsaid when asked how many were expected to play in the tournament.

McNeillsaid the golfers compete as teams for their province and also individually. He added theplayers are top level amateurs who qualified through by winning tournaments in their home province.

"These are very good amateur golfers," he said.

The players compete over 54 holes for both individual and team titles.

P.E.I. won the team portion of the championshipsat the tournament played in Newfoundland and Labrador last year.
