Free national parks admission causing confusion

Parks Canada is admitting its plan to give everyone free admission to its locations next year is causing some confusion this year, as part of celebrations of Canada's 150th anniversary.

This confusion is particularly acute on P.E.I.

This is the time of year when many Islanders purchase a park pass, choosing one of two options. The first allows admission to P.E.I. National Park for the summer season, while another called the Discovery Pass allows for 12-months of admission to all national parks across Canada.

"The confusion is that some folks think that they need to purchase Discovery Passes this year in order to give them free access in 2017. And that's not correct," said Tara McNally-MacPhee the visitor experience manager for P.E.I. National Park.

The Discovery Pass family/group fee is $136.40 with taxes included. If you buy one this July for example it would be good at any Parks Canada location across until the end of July, 2018.

Fees beyond entry pass still apply

"We encourage people to purchase their permit this year so they'll get those 24 months out of it, but the value of the pass doesn't change. We're just extending it because we know it's free for everyone in 2017," said McNally-MacPhee.

If you choose not to purchase a Discovery Pass this year you will still need one for next year, though how you'll get one is still unknown.

"There will be a permit for individuals in 2017, but they will be free of charge. And we're still figuring out how we're going to distribute those," said McNally-MacPhee.

The local P.E.I. National Park seasonal entry permit is still available this year. It allows for entry to P.E.I. National Park only. It is half price until June 15. Those who purchase that pass will also still need a Discovery Pass for 2017.

Fees for campsites and other services outside of the entry fee will still be charged during 2017.
