Gold Cup Day: What's open and closed on P.E.I. Aug. 18

Some business and services will be closed on Prince Edward Island Friday for Gold Cup Day. If you're heading to the parade in Charlottetown, be aware the route is different this year.

Most grocery stores open regular hours, some Charlottetown offices closing early

The streets of Charlottetown will be filled with onlookers as the annual Gold Cup Parade flows through the city on Friday.

There's a changethis year from theparade's traditional route.

Instead of going downQueen Street and continuing on Water Street to Prince Street, the parade will travel straight on Grafton Street. It will then turn right on Rochford Street, then left on Fitzroy Street to conclude.

Many workers in central and eastern P.E.I. will get Gold Cup Dayoff, and some businesses and offices may be closed Friday.

Here's a partial list of what will beopen and closed:

  • Charlottetown municipal offices are closing around noon, but Summerside municipal offices are open regular hours.
  • Access P.E.I. locations in Queens and Kings counties are closed, but locations in Prince County are open.
  • Island Waste Management will observe its regular schedule for the collection of bins.
  • Sobeys stores are open regular hours.
  • Atlantic Superstores are open regular hours.
  • Walmart stores areopen regular hours.
  • Murphy's pharmacies have different hours at eachlocation, but several locations are open regular hours on Friday, including Cornwall Pharmacy, KinlockPharmacy in Stratford, East Royalty Pharmacy and Queen Street Pharmacy. Callyour localpharmacyor visit the Murphy's websitefor exact hours.
  • Shopper's Drug Mart locations are open regular hours.
  • The Morell Co-op is open regular hours.
  • The Wellington Co-op is open regular hours.
  • Foodland in Charlottetown is open regular hours.
  • Foodland in Bloomfield is open regular hours.
  • The O'Leary Co-op is open regular hours.
  • The Souris Co-op is open regular hours.
  • The Tignish Co-op is open regular hours.
  • No Frills in Stratford is open regular hours.
  • Global Grocery Store in Charlottetown is open regular hours.
  • Panda Mart in Charlottetown is open regular hours.
  • Topfresh Asian Grocery Store is open regular hours.
  • HighMartconvenience store on Queen Street is open regular hours.
  • P.E.I. Liquor Control Commission and P.E.I. Cannabis stores are open regular hours.
  • Royalty Crossing mall in Charlottetown is open its regular Friday hours, 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Confederation Court Mall is open regular hours, though individual stores may close during the parade.
  • County Fair Mall in Summerside is open its regular Friday hours, 9:00 a.m. to9:00 p.m.
  • Mission Thrift Store in Charlottetown will be open9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday. Donations will be accepted from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Repeats Quality Used Family Clothing is open regular hours, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

People wanting to catch Friday's Gold Cup Parade might want to bring an umbrella or windbreaker, according to CBC meteorologist Jay Scotland's forecast for parade time. (CBC)
  • Provincial public libraries in Prince County will be open. Libraries in Kings and Queens counties will be closed.
  • UPEI's Robertson Library will be closed.
  • Canada Post will have regular delivery.

T3 Transit

  • Detourshave been in effect for T3 Transit'sCharlottetown routessince the start of Old Home Week. According to T3's Facebook page, buses 2A, 3A, 4 and 23 areoperating on a detour route. Buses travelling from downtown will go down Weymouth Street, right on St. Peters Road, right on Beasley Avenue and thenleft onto Kensington Road. Buses from Kensington Road will go right on Beasley Avenue, left on St. Peters Road and then left again on Weymouth Street.
  • On Friday morning, there will be temporary schedule changes as well:
  • Route 1: No service between 8 a.m. and 12:45 p.m.
  • Route 2 and 2A: No service between 7:45 a.m. and 12:45 p.m.
  • Route 23:No service between 8:15 a.m.and 12:45 p.m.
  • Route 3 and 3A: No service between 8:15 a.m. and 12:45 p.m.
  • Route 5: No service in the morning. Service begins at 1:20 p.m. at the Confederation Centre.
  • Route 9 (Cornwall): No changes to the morning schedule. The noon run will leave Royalty Crossing at 1 p.m.
  • Stratford: No service after 8:15 a.m., but there will be a lunch-hour bus to Stratford leaving at 12:45 p.m.
  • East collector: The last morning run to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital from the Confederation Centre is 7:45 a.m. The next available drop-off and pick-up at theQEH is at 2 p.m.
  • North collector: There will be no service to the airport from Royalty Crossing at 8:45 a.m., 9:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. (Note changes to routes 1, 2 and 3 if you plan on transferring.)
  • East Royalty shuttle: No changes.
  • Mount Herbert: There will be no service on Friday.

Shuttle for seniors, and rural transit

  • T3 is running a special shuttle service on Friday to transport seniors to and from the parade. They will be dropped off at Brighton Road and returned after the parade. Pickup times are as follows:
  • Duvar Court:8:40 a.m.
  • Charlotte Court: Riders are asked to go to Hunt Court.
  • HuntCourt: 8:46 a.m.
  • 501 Queen Street: 8:48 a.m.
  • Atlantic Superstore: 8:50 a.m.
  • Hemlock Court: 9 a.m.
  • Lions Court: 9:05 a.m.
  • Park Royal: 9:10 a.m.
  • Champion Court: 9:15 a.m.
  • There will be changes to rural transit schedules as well on Friday:
  • Charlottetown to Montaguepickup will be at Holland Collage at 11:45 a.m.
  • Charlottetown to St. Peterspickup will be at Holland Collage at 11:45 a.m.
  • Charlottetown to Summersidepickup will be at Holland Collage at 11:50 a.m.
  • All servicewill be back to regular schedule after 1 p.m. Friday.
