P.E.I. welcomes 1st refugee under Liberal settlement program

The first Syrian refugee under the Liberal government settlement program has arrived in Prince Edward Island.

Over 40 refugees expected to arrive over next 2 weeks

The first Syrian refugeeunder the Liberalgovernmentsettlement programhas arrived inPrince EdwardIsland.

The individual is one of 40 refugees expected to arrive on the Island over the next few weeks.

Susan Nye-Brothers, refugeecoordinator for the Diocese of Charlottetown, said theperson travelled toP.E.I. after arriving with 160 other refugees in Quebec.

Nye-Brothers said her group and others on the Island are always welcoming new refugees, mostly through private sponsorships.

She added there will be many emotional family reunionsover the next few weeks as more refugees arrive.

"They're happy to be reunited with family and in a safe place ... but they still have to live with what their families havegone through, what their children have seen," said Nye-Brothers. "So, it certainly doesn't end with them arriving here."
