Green Party leader wants Summerside-Wilmot byelection date set

The leader of Green Party of P.E.I.says he is pushingPremier WadeMacLauchlan to call a byelection in the districtofSummerside-Wilmot as soon as possible.

PeterBevanBaker said he'sworriedifMacLauchlanwaits too long to set a date, thebyelectionwill get in the way of anothervote on the island: the plebiscite on electoral reform set to be held late October and early November.

"The longerwe delay, if thisbyelectionis pushed into October for example, it's going to leave a terribly small window there for Islanders to concentrate on something which is fundamentally important,profoundablyimportant the plebiscite coming up. So that would be a problem," said Bevan-Baker.

MacLauchlan still hasn't said just when he'll make the call to fill the seat vacated by now former Liberal MLA Janice Sherry.

To date, the Green Party is the only party with a declared candidate for the byelection. Deputy leaderLynne Lund is going to run for the vacant seaton behalf of the party.

The Liberals, ProgessiveConservatives and New Democratic Parties arestill taking nominations.
