A nine-year-old busker is stealing the spotlight at The Guild in Charlottetown this summer.

Luka Hall scored the gig after his fiddle teacher introduced him to The Guild executive director Alanna Jankov, who spoke to his mother and asked him to act as the busker-in-residence for the summer.

"So far since it's started, it's been an amazing success for both The Guild and Luka," Jankov told CBC Radio One's Mainstreet P.E.I.

Luka says he jumped at the offer.

"I just love entertaining people and it just brings joy to the world for me."

Luka plays once a week for now, but once school is over he'll be booked four or five times a week.

He says the crowds have been complimentary so far, even though he's only been playing for about three years. He plays jigs and reels with the occasional step dance thrown in for good measure.

"I really like older people, because they're really polite," he said.

Plans to buy iPad

The tips have been good, and Luka says he's planning to buy an iPad with his summer money.

Jankov says Luka entertains patrons coming to buy tickets or waiting to get into the theatre for a show. Last Friday's performance of Anne and Gilbert was delayed because of Luka.

"They wanted to stay outside and listen to Luka," she said.

"We were kind of ushering the patrons in saying, 'OK, the show is about to start,' and they were saying, 'Oh, can we listen for just a few more minutes?'"

Jankov says Luka has been a positive addition to The Guild.

"He not only breathes amazing fresh air and positive energy with the staff, but also the cast and crew of all the shows, the tours, the local people and people are now stopping and asking, 'When is Luka back?'"

Not to worry. Jankov says The Guild will set up a sign to let people know when to expect Luka's next performance. If it's raining, you'll find Luka performing in the gallery.
