Initative encourages filling half your plate with fresh vegetables and fruits

The Canadian Produce Marketing Association launched its 2016 Half Your Plate initiative in Tracadie Cross, P.E.I. on Tuesday.

The initiative, started in 2015 encourages Canadians to incorporate more fruits and vegetables into their meals and snacks.

Chef Michael Smith, the culinary ambassador for the Half Your Plate initiative, held a cooking demonstration to show the over 200 people attending how to cook and fill half their plates with produce.

Sue Lewis, Director of Market Development said now is the best time to fill up on fruits and vegetables.

"Especially this time of year when we have such an abundance of fresh vegetables that are available to us at a great price, lots of them locally grown, and it's easy to incorporate them into their everyday meals," said Lewis.

The initiative also works to combat obesity and other diseases in partnership with the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Canadian Public Health Association and the Canadian Cancer Society.

"Obesity in Canada, among young people, is growing, and that's worrisome. We also know that incidents of chronic disease are starting earlier, so eating fruits and vegetables is great way to help delay the onset of some chronic diseases and avoid others, so it's important for all Canadians."
