Atlantic provinces ink deal to purchase ignition-interlock devices

The four Atlantic provinces are going in together on a deal to buy ignition-interlock devices as part of their efforts to cut down on impaired driving.

The use of these devices is typically imposed by courts or voluntarily assumed by a driver

The four Atlantic provinces are going in together on a deal to buy ignition-interlock devices as part of their efforts to cut down on impaired driving.

An estimated 1,000 interlock systems are installed annually for Atlantic Canadians who have the devices as part of driver licence reinstatement following a conviction for impaired driving.

The installation and monitoring costs are wholly paid by the individuals involved.

The deal with Alcolock Canada of Toronto is for five years and allows the provinces to buy the devices in bulk and save money.

P.E.I. Minister of Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy Paula Biggar said in a release the Island has seen a reduction in the rate of drunk driving, but the goal is to eliminate it entirely.

"Interlock systems will allow people with a history of impaired driving to return to the road subject to their ability to prove they are alcohol free," she said.

Once installed in a vehicle, these devices prevent it from being started and driven unless the driver can provide a breath sample free from alcohol.
