Summerside-Wilmot MLA Janice Sherry leaving provincial politics
Liberal MLA announced resignation Monday to return to private life after nearly a decade in elected office
Janice Sherry is leaving provincial politics. P.E.I.'s Liberal Party announced Mondaythat the MLA forthe district ofSummerside-Wilmotwould be returning to private life effective immediately.
"I want to thank my constituents and caucus colleagues for all of the supportthey have shown me," said Sherry in a news release.
"While I will miss this job, it is time to pass the baton to someone else withfresh ideas and to encourage rejuvenation in the party."
Sherry was first elected MLA forSummerside-Wilmot in 2007. She was re-elected for a thirdterm in 2015.
Nearly 10years in elected office
During her tenure, she served as Government Whip and held a number of cabinet level portfolios including Minister of Environment, Labour and Justice, Minister Responsible for Public Safety and served as Attorney General.
In a news release, Premier Wade MacLauchlanthanked Sherry for her service.
"I am confident Janice willcontinue to serve her community, our province, and the Liberal Party well in all of her furtherendeavours."
One of Sherry's most recent positions was on the Special Committee of the Legislative Assembly on Democratic Renewal.
She urged Islanders to vote in the upcoming plebiscite in November.
