Kayaker found safe after search

A 62-year-old missingkayaker was found last night in Fairview, P.E.I. following an extensive search by police, dozens of ground search and rescue volunteers and fire fighters.

Corporal Dan D'Amourof theQueens District RCMP said Charlottetown police were first alerted that the man was missing when they received a call from his girlfriend who was worried he had not returned back after kayaking along the West River.

RCMP, the North River fire department andvolunteers searched the shoreline near Fairview for several hours.

They found the kayak tied up on the shore and then began searching the area nearby.

D'Amour saidthe man was found in the woods at about 10 p.m. He saidit's possible the volunteer fire fighters and the search and rescue volunteers saved the man's life.

Thechief of the North River Fire department, Kirby Wakelin said his members were searchingalong the shore, had a boat in the water and an amphibious all terrain vehicle on the land.

"It was the guys who were walking along that found him not that far from his kayak," said Wakelin.

"It's a lot better feeling than the alternative. And I really praised up the member that actually did find him. I mean it's a team effort from everybody for sure. But it's a lot nicer when it's this outcome."

RCMP notethe man appeared to be fine but was sent to hospital for observation.
