A new project at the Legacy Garden behind the Farm Centre in Charlottetown will give people a chance to have a tree or shrub planted in memory of a loved one.

Work has already begun on a parcel of land that will be used for a Memorial Garden. It will have a deck with a seating area and planter boxes, with the garden behind it.

Farm centre officials say the money raised through the project will help cover some of the costs of keeping the Legacy Garden going.

"Once we get the initial stages built this year we will be advertising and encouraging people to make a donation," said Farm Centre general manager Phil Ferraro.

"We will plant a tree, a shrub, or a garden in memory of or in celebration of an individual, a pet, a particular event maybe, whatever it is that people might want to commemorate."

Plaques or markers will be placed by each donated plant. The memorial area will be maintained by the group Food Share.

There are other additions at the Legacy Garden this year, Ferraro said, including more plots and new tabletop, raised beds for people with mobility challenges.
