Miscouche volunteer firefighters are grieving after Mike Gallant, a captain with the department, died in a vehicle crash in Margate Thursday, says the fire chief.

Gallant, 51, was returning to work after an emergency call with the fire department when the single-vehicle crash occurred on Highway 6, northeast of Kensington, says Jason Woodbury.

Gallant was pronounced dead at the scene.

Woodbury says Gallant was a valued volunteer firefighter and the entire community is in mourning.

"He was certainly passionate with the fire department and provided exceptional emergency service to the community of Miscouche and our surrounding fire districts," said Woodbury.

"You know, it's important for us as one, the chief of the fire department and my senior officers, to support our firefighters during this devastating time."

The department is planning to play an active role in the funeral service, Woodbury says.

The family has asked the department to invite all the fire departments across P.E.I., he says.

The Summerside fire department will provide the honour guards for Gallant.

In a statement, Labour Minister Janice Sherry expressed condolences to Gallant's friends and family.

"My heart is with the Prince Edward Island firefighting community as they grieve the life of a dear friend and leader."
