Proposed Mi'kmaq Confederacy building to get second look from Charlottetown council

The City of Charlottetown will takeanother look at the Mi'kmaq Confederacy's waterfront proposal, after council agreed to re-examine the proposed three-storey building at the corner of Stan MacPhersonWay and Water Street.

Council rejected the request in August, but the Confederacy appealed to the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission.

Public meeting

Charlottetown's citycouncil agreed Tuesday to re-examine the decision.

City officials say a public meeting will be held as part of the new review, likely near the end of this month.

The confederacywantsto construct a building that would include office space, an Aboriginal Friendship Centre, a gift shop and a car rental service.

The application seeksto rezone a piece of property at 8 Stan MacPherson Way from Port Zone to Waterfront Zone. This would have given the Mi'kmaq Confederacy the ability to have a retail component on the first floor, something the group argued would be optimal for tourists and cruise ship traffic.

Car rental agency

The group also hoped to rent space in the building to a car rental agency, which is not permitted under the current zoning.

The Charlottetown Harbour Authority has already signed a deal with the Mi'kmaq Confederacy for the sale of the property.
