MoonShiner Swim founder plans to swim Northumberland Strait Saturday

Logan Hayman will be swimming the approximately 14-kilometre span of the Northumberland Strait Saturday for the inaugural MoonShiner's Swim.

He told Island Morning's host Mitch Comier he had an ambitious plan for the event by getting 2,000 international athletes to the Island by 2020 and focus on giving back to P.E.I.

For this year's inaugural swim, he is the only participant.

"Basically the mission for the whole event is to have the biggest economic, spiritual and social impact on Prince Edward Island as humanly possible."

Hayman, who arrived in P.E.I. from Vancouver on Thursday, said this year's swim is a launch point to map out the processes and procedures needed to make it a world class event.

Giving back

While the event is starting small, Hayman said he had big plans to promote it as a way to give back to the community.

The Summerside native said he thought he was prepared and was going to be able to complete The Big Swim last year but said issues with his back and legs forced him out of the water.

"I'm still wearing the loss from 2015. I had to tap out at about six hours," said Hayman.

Hayman said he is mentally prepared this year and has limited his contact with others until the swim is complete.

Hayman added he had the opportunity to do a lot more training to prepare, because he has been living so close to the Pacific Ocean.

"I'm living in a little houseboat, an old forty-nine vintage wooden boat so literally jump off the bow of the boat and do my training."
