More layoffs to come at Georgetown shipyard

As work winds down, layoffs continue at the East Isle Shipyard in Georgetown.

Layoffs continue at the East Isle Shipyard in Georgetown.

Irving officials say work is winding down on a tug that will be delivered in early May and nothing else is lined up yet.

There were 13 layoffs last week.

"We are continuing to look for other opportunities to bring to the shipyard but at this point in time there is nothing to announce. The vessel will be complete and delivered to the customer and work will resume at the yard when we have a new contract, a new customer to build ships for," said Mary Keith for Irving Shipbuilding.

There have been about 36 layoffs since December.

Keith says once the current contract is complete, a basic crew will be maintained at the site until new work is secured.
