Greet the week with a song, Music Monday hits the Island

Nobody likes Mondays, but this will put a little rhythm in your step.

It's Music Monday and events are taking place all day in Charlottetown.

Kirsten MacLaine, a music teacher at Gulf Shore Consolidated, the president of the Canadian Music Educators Association and one of the organizers of Music Monday, said the event was created 12 years ago to raise awareness about music.

"Its intention is to raise awareness of the value of music in our lives," said MacLaine.

"Music is such an integral part of a student's education and development, such an integral part of who we are as human beings."

MacLaine said the Island is in a privileged position because of its expansive music education program.

"We here on Prince Edward Island are very fortunate in that we currently have a music specialist in every school. Sadly that's not the case though nationwide," said MacLaine.

'Everyone will join their voices together'

There will be a number of musical events going on from 12:45 to 9:00 p.m., but the main event will be at 1:30 at Trinity United Church where provincial students will join othersacross the country in singing the Music Monday anthem.

"Everyone will join their voices together and sing this anthem and that's such an incredible feeling to know that you're singing along with an entire country," said Kristen MacLaine.

Last year the big celebration on the Island took place in Summerside, P.E.I. The success of that day impressed the Coalition for Music Education, the organization behind the national initiative.

Something to look forward to

"The coalition are actually sending their president and chair Eric Favreau to the Charlottetown event, not to the main event in Ottawa, because they are continually so impressed with what it is we do here on Prince Edward Island," said MacLaine.

As for MacLaine's students, they're excited.

"They look forward to music Monday almost as much as I do every year," said MacLaine.

Events will be held at Province House, Trinity United Church, Murphy's Community Centre, St. Paul's Anglican Church, St. Dunstan's Basilica and Receiver Coffee.
