Irish Mythen wins P.E.I. Songwriter of the Year for 'Gypsy Dancer'

Irish Mythen was the only person nominated for SOCAN Songwriter of the Year who wasn't at the concert Wednesday night at the King's Playhouse in Georgetown, P.E.I.

Her win for her song 'Gypsy Dancer'wasaccepted on her behalf. The Irish-born, now Charlottetown-based Mythen is currently on tour in the United States.

The winning song is from her third, self-titled LP, released after she moved to P.E.I. an album that also picked up anECMAfor Roots/Traditional Solo Recording of the Year in 2015.

The other nominees for P.E.I.'s Songwriter of the YearJosh Carter of Coyote, Tim Chaisson, Emilee Sorrey of Sorrey and Nathan Wiley played the major kick-off concert forthe May Run Music Festival.

"King's Playhouse in Georgetown is a gem of a theatre and the audience was treated to a truly beautiful show by some of P.E.I.'s best songwriters," said Music PEI executive director Rob Oakie.

"May Run Music Festival, which has evolved from the much loved Music PEI Week, has grown as a whole and it's great to see the community getting behind this event."

Chaisson was nominated for his song Miss Saying Goodbye, Coyote for Old News,Sorrey for Washingtonand Wiley for Queen of the Road.

This is the first of 34 awards to be handed out during the May Run Music Festival, which wraps up Sunday night.
