The federal government has announced $76,295 to help Naufrage, P.E.I., become more of a seaside destination to tourists, as part of ACOA's Innovative Communities Fund.

MP for Cardigan, Lawrence MacAulay, announced the contribution Wednesday to support non-profit group Friends of the Shipwreck Point Lighthouse Inc.

The group was formed to promote tourism and to support business development in the area.

Phase one of the group's tourism plan includes the creation of a commercial kiosk, a pergola attaching to the existing harbour authority office, as well as a new picnic gazebo and decking overlooking the beach.

The group also plans to upgrade the historic schoolhouse in the area a building from 1854 that still houses original furniture.
