P.E.I.'s Roman Catholics welcomed a new leader Monday night.

With a traditional knock on the door, Richard Grecco was invited inside St. Dunstan's Basilica to become the bishop of the diocese of Charlottetown.

Church leaders from across Canada gathered for the ceremony. The opening procession included 80 priests and 16 bishops. More than 1,000 people attended.

Grecco, who comes to the Island from Toronto, said he has some learning to do.

"A work of every bishop is to bring unity to the community, and faith, hope and love," he said.

"My immediate task of course is to get to know the people, get to know the priests. I will be doing that by listening as closely as I can to what they have to say."

Grecco takes over from Vernon Fougere, who retired earlier this summer.

The 63-year-old Grecco is the 13th man to hold the post on P.E.I.
