New document works to improve event accessibility in Charlottetown

A document to help make events more accessible has been adopted by the City of Charlottetown.

The document was created following the city's forum on Creating a Barrier-Free City.

Included in the document is a checklist for event-planners, with items like:

• is a person with disabilities on the planning committee?
• are parking spots designated for those with disabilities close to the entrance?

The document also covers accessible transportation, accommodations, seating and washrooms.

The release said the document is intended to be a guideline for event planners and organizers.

"We realize that each event organizer has a budget they have to stick to and each venue comes with its own challenges for being completely accessible, but going through the checklist and eliminating as many barriers as possible is a step in the right direction," said Councillor Mitchell Tweel, Chair of the Civic Board for Persons with Disabilities.

The document was developed by the Civic Board for Persons with Disabilities and the P.E.I. Council for Persons with Disabilities.
