Northumberland Ferries service resumes May 1

There will be a small increase in fares when the ferry service between Prince Edward Islandand Nova Scotia resumes on May 1.

Donald Cormier, vice president of operations and safety management for Northumberland Ferries said the fare will increase by about $1 for the 2016 season.

"We should have the Confederation in service on the first of May with five round trip departures," said Cormier.

"Our rates are going up as they do a little bit every year, basically the rate of inflation. It's approximately a dollar on the car with all passengers included. So the rate goes from $70 to $71 dollars this year."

The ferry goes from Wood Islands, P.E.I., to Caribou, N.S.

Last year's ferry start was delayed until May 8 because of ice in the Northumberland Strait.

Cormier said ice is not a problem this year andnavigational aids will be going in the water soon.

He adds Northumberland Ferries hopes to build on the success of the 2015 season.

Traffic using the ferry was up byclose to eight per cent.

Cormier said entertainment such as Music on Deck and culinary events will continue again this summer.
