Orphanage settlement could remain secret

The parties involved in working out a settlement for former residents of the Mount Herbert Orphanage in P.E.I. want the courts to stop the agreement from being made public.

The parties involved in working out a settlement for former residents of the Mount Herbert Orphanage in P.E.I. want the courts to stop the agreement from being made public.

More than 50 former residents of the orphanage claim they were physically, sexually or emotionally abused while living there in the 1950s and 1960s. They've been trying to reach a settlement with the Protestant Children's Trust for the past 10 years.

The trust has assets of about $1 million.

The P.E.I. Supreme Court sent the media notice Wednesday that the parties want to have the settlement sealed. It's asked media organizations to present submissions if they want to argue that the deal should be made public.
