P.E.I. election date could move

P.E.I. Premier Robert Ghiz says the next provincial election will be likely be six months later than planned.

P.E.I. Premier Robert Ghiz says the next provincial election will be likely be six months later than planned.

After the 2011 election, under the province's fixed election date legislation, the next election was announced for Oct. 5, 2015.

In the legislature Tuesday Ghiz said it looks as if that date will conflict with the next federal election, so P.E.I. will likely move its next vote to April 2016.

"They were originally going to move theirs and make it at a different date, since five or six provinces had that date," said Ghiz.

"Of course Ontario has fallen into a minority situation as well so the federal government has announced they're going to keep their fixed election date and we'll do the same thing that Saskatchewan and Manitoba are doing."

Ghiz said the change in election date cannot yet be confirmed, because there is always the chance the federal government will hold its election earlier than the fall of 2015.
