P.E.I. minimum wage moving to $11

The minimum wage on Prince Edward Island will increase by 50 cents over the course of 2016.

The wage is currently $10.50/hour. It will go up twice in 2016, to $10.75 on June 1 and $11 on Oct. 1.

That would make the minimum wage in P.E.I. higher than any currently in Atlantic Canada.

• New Brunswick: $10.30/hour
• Nova Scotia: $10.60/hour
• Newfoundland and Labrador: $10.50/hour

Ontario, Alberta and the Northwest Territories currently have minimum wages higher than $11/hour.

The government says about 9.3 per cent of Island workers are paid at the minimum wage rate.
