A P.E.I. youth choir is heading to the Vatican to sing at a ceremony for the late Pope John Paul II.

The Confederation Centre Youth Chorus will be performing at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome this Thursday during evening mass.

"Once the kids walk into St. Peter's Basilica, I mean, just walking into the building itself is an awesome experience. You know, I think that's when it will really sink in," said Don Fraser, chorus director. "I would say that even now, before we get on the airplane, there's a much greater level of excitement and sort of knowledge about what's it's all about."

Forty-one Island kids and eight adults are going to Rome for the beatification ceremony, which honours John Paul II.

Fraser said the choir had to raise over $36,000 dollars for the trip.
