After two record years for the Island, P.E.I. Tourism Minister Heath MacDonaldsays2016 is also shaping up to be a promising one.

Some tourism operators are telling the province bookings have started off strong, something thatbodes well for the season,MacDonaldsaid in a written release.

"Although it's still too early to tell, I'm cautiously optimistic that these great first indications will build on the success of the last two years and lead to a successful 2016 season," he added.

Anecdotal information on overnight bookings, combined with a good exchange rate on the Canadian dollar, means 2016 should be a good year for visitors to the Island, he said.

"We are up significantly from our 2014 season, and we are seeing only increased tourism and interest in our province," saidIsaacMacPhersonof theNorthwindsMotel inBrackleyBeach.

"Our bookings so far this year have been very good," said Judy Pye of the Shipwright Inn in Charlottetown. "Last year was our best year ever, and this year may be even better."

Officials with the Tourism Industry Association of P.E.I. said they are pleased with the numbers that they're seeing for the upcoming tourism season.
