Accessible parking fine could rise to $200

The P.E.I. government has tabled a bill to increase the minimum fine for parking illegally in an accessible parking space.

The minimum fine in Charlottetown and Summerside is $50.

Some towns and unincorporated areas in P.E.I. use the Highway Traffic Act, which has a minimum fine of $100.

A bill was tabled in the legislature Thursday to double the fine. The bill goes to second reading next week.

"These spaces are designated for those with mobility impairments and there are proper documents or designations one needs to use these," said Graham Miner, P.E.I.'s director of highway safety.

"So it's also to shine light on this for the public to create more awareness."
