The Boys and Girls Club of Charlottetown is expanding its GED preparatory program.

The free program now has a tutor available for all subjects on Mondays and Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Tutors will continue to be available Monday through Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., as well.

Krista Shaw, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club of Charlottetown, said the program is a valuable resource for anyone interested in or already enrolled in the Adult Education program at Holland College or anyone working toward their high school equivalency.

The program is open to anyone, not just youth, she said, adding that one of the first people to attend the night program was a 67-year-old man.

"We just want to see people succeed," she said. "It's a big step to be able to decide to go back to school or try further your education."

Last spring, the drop-in centre at the Boys and Girls Club introduced new programming to reach out to students who are pursuing their GED or high school equivalency test. A certified teacher is available to provide tutoring to anyone attempting the GED on their own or working toward entrance exams to get into a GED preparatory program. All services are tailored to the individual's needs and resources such as necessary school supplies, books and computers are all provided for use free of charge.

Shaw said they've had eight clients go through the night program.

"They all have said, 'We would never been able to pass without the help we received from you guys.'"
