A plan by the Mi'kmaq Confederacy of P.E.I. to build on the Charlottetown waterfront has received approval from city council.

Two bylaw amendments passed third reading Monday evening to clear the way for the friendship centre at the corner of Stan MacPherson Way and Water Street. One rezoned the property from port to waterfront, and the other allowed for a car rental agency in the building.

The new building will contain a cultural centre, space for programming for Indigenous communities, and retail space.

Council rejected the proposal for the building in August, but began the process of reconsidering it in the fall.
