3 arrested, kilograms of drugs seized on Confederation Bridge, say RCMP

Cocaine, crystal meth and contraband cigarettes were all part of what was seized in a targeted traffic stop Thursday on the bridge that connects P.E.I. and New Brunswick, say RCMP.

The stop on the Confederation Bridge resulted in the confiscation of a kilogram of cocaine, a kilogram of crystal methamphetamine in brick form, more than 500 pills including meth and other drugs, 101 cartons of contraband cigarettes, and knives, said Cpl. Gavin Moore, a spokesperson for the RCMP on P.E.I.

"When you get into the kilo level, [these are] larger amounts," Moore said. "This represents thousands of uses of drugs, and will certainly have an effect on the drug supply on the Island."

The traffic stop, near the P.E.I. side of the bridge, was the result of an investigation involving several police forces, both on the Island and off, said Moore.In addition to the RCMP, the news release credited Summerside and Kensington police, and Ontario Central Region RCMP with assisting in the case.

RCMP charged three people with trying to transport a significant amount of drugs, including cocaine and crystal meth, across the Confederation Bridge on Thursday. The bridge and the community on the P.E.I. side, Borden-Carleton,act as "a funnel and a choke point" for police operations like this, which Moore said "can be handy."

The three arrested, who are all from P.E.I., each face three charges of possession for the purpose of trafficking, and two charges of illegal possession of tobacco.

"These are dangerous drugs and with that we put a large amount of effort," he said.

The accused appeared in Summerside court Friday, said Moore. They will reamin in custody and are due back in court Monday.
