The P.E.I. Department of Transportation expects it will be able to maintain two lanes of traffic for peak traffic as work continues on the Cornwall bypass next week.

Two lanes will be open eastbound from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and westbound from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in order to accommodate Charlottetown commuters. Traffic lights at the North River intersection have been removed, and a temporary roundabout has been constructed to guide traffic during working and non-working hours.

The department is still suggesting drivers find alternate routes and busy times if possible, in order to minimize delays.

Work during next week will include

  • Laying the shale and gravel base at the intersection for the roundabout.
  • Installation of electrical infrastructure for highway lighting;
  • Installation of a storm sewer collection system.
  • Concrete curbing.
  • Water main installation along the south towards the North River Bridge.
  • Deck work on the North River Bridge.

Drivers are asked to be alert and to operate with concern for the safety of workers, pedestrians and their fellow motorists as construction proceeds.
