Cornwall to start charging non-resident fees for rec programs

Out-of-towners will soon have to pay more to attend programs and classes offered by the Cornwall Recreation Department.

Higher non-resident fees were unanimously approved by council, said Town CAO Kevin McCarville, and go into effect on Jan. 1, 2017.

"This council decided now's the time to implement the fee," he said. "It's an expensive venture to run the town, as you can well imagine."

The fee affects classes and programs offered at the Civic Centre including before and after school programming and
summer day camp.

McCarville said in most cases, non-residents will be charged $10 more than what residents will be charged.

An extra $5,000 expected from new fees

McCarville estimated non-residents account for about a third of the people who take part in the town's programs.

Non-residents currently registered in programs have been sent a notice, and McCarville said he hasn't received any complaints.

He said the extra fees raised are expected to bring in$5,000 a year, and will go into Cornwall's general revenue.
