P.E.I.'s Covehead Bridge open to two-way traffic

Covehead Bridge is finally open to two-way traffic, pedestrians and cyclists.

The repaving of the bridge is now complete, Parks Canada said in a news release.

Road closures at Wharf Road and Shaw's Beach in P.E.I. National Park have been removed, as well, and the detour has been lifted. Construction work will continue under the bridge with divers until mid-October.

Construction on the $5.8 million projectbegan in October 2015.

Improvements to the bridge include three-metre-wide raised sidewalks for pedestrians and cyclists.

The bridge also has new barriers to prevent people from jumping off the side.

Parks Canada is investing $3 billion over five years to support infrastructure work to heritage, visitor, waterway and highway assets located within national historic sites, national parks and national marine conservation areas across Canada.
