Charlottetown houses come down to make way for condos

Demolition is almost complete on nine properties located along Passmore and Chestnut streets near the Charlottetown downtown core.

Developer Philip O'Halloran has received approval from city council to build on the site.

The new development will include 48 apartments along with two or three commercial sites on street level facing Chestnut Street.

The four-storey building will also feature underground parking.

At a public meeting in February, some city residents spoke out against the project, saying it wouldn't fit the culture of the neighbourhoodand it would be too big.

But council gave its approval in April.

There's no word when construction might begin.

The design is still under review, O'Halloransaid,and he has been awaiting final approval from the province on a development agreement.
