Return of lost dog 'would mean the world' to family devastated by fire

A family who lost almost everything in a fire in Head ofHillsboroughearlier this month is looking for one of their young St. Bernard dogs they believe escaped during the fire.

Family members have started aFacebookpage called Bring Home Mister Moe asking people in the Mount Stewart area to keep an eye out for the dog.

Six two-day-old puppies died in the fire, resident Chris MacLeod said. The family was able to safely remove the mother dog, Macey, and one of her six-month-old pups, Little Bear and MacLeod believes another six-month-old, Moe, may have also escaped.

"I woke up to Macey bit me in the cheek to wake me up and the bedroom was all ablaze," MacLeod said. "Another 10 seconds and I would have been engulfed by the flames."

"She saved all of us. If it wasn't for her, none of us would be here today, all four of us would have been dead," he said.

The fire marshal has since determined the fire was caused by a space heater too close to flammable material.

After making sure his wife and sons were safely out of the house, MacLeod ran next door to his daughter's home to call 911.

'We couldn't find Moe'

"I ran back over to make sure that all the dogs were out," MacLeod recalled. "But we couldn't find Moe."

"We're not sure if he ended up still in the fire or if he came out with the other dogs, when the other dogs came out, and we just didn't see him at the time," MacLeod added.

The century-old farmhouse the family had been renting was destroyed in the fire. All the family's belongings including many Christmas gifts also went up in flames, and they did not have renter's insurance, MacLeod said.

"It would mean the world to us," to get Moeback, MacLeod said. "Our dogs are just like our kids, they're all very special to us."
