Island farmers donating eggs for Pride P.E.I.

Like many Islanders, Sunday morning's shooting at a nightclub in Orlando that killed 49 people and left 53 wounded left Sally Bernard shaken and wanting to find a positive way to help the LGBTQ community.

Bernard and her husband Mark, owners of Barnyard Organics in Freetown, have been overrun with organic eggs.

So they decided an egg giveaway would be a great way to raise awareness, plus money for education work at Pride P.E.I.

"It really shook me. It shook me more than I expected," Bernard told Island Morning host Matt Rainnie on Tuesday.

Bernard estimates she will have 70 to 80 dozen eggs available for Islanders at the Farm Centre from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in return for a donation to Pride P.E.I.

The organic eggs would sell for about $6 a dozen, but Bernard said people can donate whatever they can afford.

Vigil planned for Tuesday

"Well, I'm a little worried I'm going to be overwhelmed now, and I may run out of eggs," she said.

"I'm not a giant farm. But you know, there is enough to get around to a few people for sure."

In addition, half-pound packages of bacon are available for purchase.

One Islander offered to purchase the whole lot for $1,000, said Bernard.

But the point of the giveaway is to raise awareness and take a moment to think about the LGBTQ community on the Island and elsewhere in the Maritimes.

A vigil is planned for the shooting victims Tuesday at Trinity United Church from 8 to 9 p.m.
