Visitors to eastern P.E.I. this weekend will have an opportunity to experience Spanish history on the seas first hand .

The El Galeon, a replica 17th century Spanish galleon, arrived in Georgetown, and began accepting visitors on board Friday. A tour costs $10.

The ship spent the summer touring the Great Lakes. This is its only stop in Atlantic Canada.

El Galeon's design dates from a time when Spain was a major colonial power, with ships carrying valuable cargoes from Manila to Acapulco, and Havana to Seville.

While the design is 17th century, there is a modern aspect to the crew. The captain is a woman, which is unusual on tall ships even in the 21st century.

The ship will remain in Georgetown until Sunday.
