With just hours left for Prince Edward Islanders to vote in an electoral reform plebiscite, Elections P.E.I. is urging people to get out and cast their ballot.

Provincial general elections on P.E.I. typically see voter turnouts above 80 per cent.As of 7:40 a.m. Monday the turnout was only at about a third of that, at 28 per cent.

That's frustrating for Elections P.E.I. communications manager Paul Alan.

'We have to use our voice,' says Paul Alan. (Matt Rainnie/CBC)

"We've talked to people who've said, 'It's not broken. Why are you trying to fix it?' My message to them is, 'Well, if that's your opinion, you need to vote,'" said Alan.

Alan pointed out the vote is about whether to change the system or not, so no matter which side you are on, your vote is the best way to make your voice heard.

"I've seen a lot of people online complaining this is costing so much money. It's a waste of time because it's not binding," he said.

"Government has given us this opportunity to voice our opinion. It doesn't happen all that often, and we have to use our voice."
