P.E.I. could soon be getting some electric school buses.

The government is considering an electric option among the 20 or so school buses it orders every year, said Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy Minister Paula Biggar.

"We certainly are exploring and have been looking at what is offered in Ontario and Quebec in terms of electric buses, and what would be needed to use that as a prototype project for Prince Edward Island," she said.

The information came to light in the provincial legislature following questions from the Green Party Leader Peter Bevan-Baker. He said the transportation sector is the largest source of greenhouse gases on P.E.I., and asked what the province is doing to get more hybrid and electric vehicles on the roads, including incentives.
