Cyclist killed in motor vehicle collision in West Prince

A woman from Alberton, riding a bicycleon Route 12 in Kildare Capes, P.E.I., was killed Monday after being struck by a vehicle, according to RCMP.

Sgt. Derrick Hewitt says police, ambulance and the Tignish fire departmentwere called to the scene at 6:51 p.m.

The woman, who police say was 60 years old, was taken to hospital. RCMP were unable to confirm whether the woman died in hospital or while en route.

Hewitt saidboth thecyclist and the driver of the car were travelling south at the time of the crash.

According toRCMP, the vehicle "failed to remain at the scene."

Local residents ran to help

Art Travers, who lives nearby, told CBC News he heard a crash and looked outside, where he saw a woman lying on the ground. He said his daughter-in-law ran to the woman's side while his son phoned 911.

Travers said he didn't see anyone else cyclingwith the woman and RCMP confirmed that she was riding alone at the time.

A man from P.E.I. was arrested in relation to the collision early Tuesday morning, Hewitt said.

Police found the car they believe was involved and the allegeddriverabout five hours after the crash, Hewitt said although he did not say where exactly the suspect was located.

At this point the man has not been charged, Hewitt said, but will be taken before a justice to determineif he will be remanded or released.

Police are askinganyone who may have witnessed the collision to contact West Prince RCMP.
