2 Charlottetown residents killed in highway collision in N.B.

Two people from Charlottetown have died following a two-vehicle collision on the Trans-Canada Highway in Melrose, N.B., about 10 kilometres from the Confederation Bridge.

Two people from Charlottetown have died following a two-vehicle collision on the Trans-Canada Highway in Melrose, N.B., about 10 kilometres from the Confederation Bridge.

Shortly before 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sackville RCMP responded to a report of a head-on collision between a minivan and a pickup truck hauling a trailer on Route 16, police said in a news release.

The driver of the minivan, a 43-year-old man, and the passenger, a 37-year-old woman, both died at the scene as a result of their injuries. The driver and onlyoccupant of the pickup truck was transported to hospital with what arebelieved to be serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Police believe the collision happenedwhen the minivan, travelling eastbound, crossed the centre line and collided head-on with the pickup truck.

Autopsies will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death for the two individuals.

The investigation into the collisionis ongoing.

It was the third fatal accident involvingP.E.I. residents over the weekend.

A 35-year-old Kings County woman was killed and a child was rushed tohospital with life-threatening injuries following a single-vehicle collision Friday on 48Road in Head of Cardigan.

The same day, a42-year-oldman died after a collision between a motorcycle and dump truck at Garfield Street and Strawberry Lane in Charlottetown.
