Barns destroyed as Albany hog farm suffers 2nd fire in a year and a half

Two barns were destroyed by fire early Tuesday morning at a hog farm in Albany, P.E.I.

Borden-Carleton fire chief Shawn Jessome said firefighters were called to D & E Pork at about 3 a.m. and were able to finally extinguishthe blaze by 11 a.m.

This was the second major fire at the hog farm in just over 18 months. In January2023, thousands of hogs were killed in a fire on the property.

Jessome would not say whether any livestock died this time, but East Prince RCMP said in a news release Tuesday afternoon that "it is believed many of the animals perished in the fire."

That same police news release called the fire "extensive, with several building engulfed in flames by 4a.m., and two buildings fully engulfed shortly thereafter."

Jessome said the firefighters' main concern was keeping the fire from spreading to other structures on the property.

Fire departments from Kinkora, Crapaud and Kensington were also on scene.

RCMP said the fire is under investigation.
