Thousands without power on P.E.I. as high winds fell trees

High winds have knocked out power to thousands of households in communities across P.E.I.

Maritime Electric says crews have been dispatched and are working to restore power. As of 8:30p.m., about 12,000 customers were without power.

Maritime Electic said in a release there was a problem with its transmission line system in the Kelly's Cross-Emyvale area. Crews were patrolling the area and trying to make repairs. Its call centre will stay open all night.

The Island is experiencing rain and winds Environment Canada said could reach 110 km/h.

The winds are expected to diminish Sunday night, the weather service said.

Ferries, airport, bridge affected

Northumberland Ferries Ltd. cancelled its crossings between Wood Islands, P.E.I. and Caribou, N.S.

The Charlottetown Airport said the weather is affecting flight schedules and travellers should check ahead before going to the airport.

Traffic has also been restricted on the Confederation Bridge. Restricted classes include automobiles towing trailers, motorcycles, high-sided vehicles including trucks, tractor trailers, recreational vehicles and buses.

Slushy roads

The RCMP are advising motorists to drive with caution, and say all roads on the Island are currently "very dangerous." Visibility is poor and roads are becoming covered in slush.

The winds may toss loose objects or cause tree branches to break.

Rough pounding surf and higher than normal water levels can be expected along portions of the southern Gulf of St. Lawrence coast, the weather service said.
