Covered Bridge wins Gold Cup and Saucer for 2nd year in a row

Covered Bridge was the runaway winner of the $100,000 Gold Cup and Saucer on Saturday night at Red Shores Racetrack in Charlottetown.

Covered Bridge was the runaway winner of the $100,000 Gold Cup and Saucer on Saturday night at Red Shores Racetrack in Charlottetown.

It was the second Gold Cup win in a row for the eight-year-old horse, owned by Mark Ford of New York and driven by Jordan Stratton.

"The first one was pretty close to the best experience in my life and my racing career and this is right alongside of it," Stratton said after the race.

About 20,000 fans were in attendance for the 65th edition of the event, considered Atlantic Canada's most prestigious harness race.

"The fans here are just unbelievable," Stratton said. "It's so great to see the harness racing supported by the local community."

Stratton drove Covered Bridge across the finish line to victory in 2023, and pulled it off again at the 2024 event with a time of 1:50.4. He spoke with CBC after the race about what the win means to him and how supportive the harness racing community is on P.E.I.

Covered Bridge won the mile race by 3lengths in a time of 1:50.4.He now has 51 lifetime victories and more than $1.46 million in earnings.

Twin B Tuffenuff was second and Save America was third.
