Greg Campbell, P.E.I. vice-principal, showed pattern of harassment, says Crown

A former school vice-principal who pleaded guilty to criminal harassment of a woman last year has demonstrated similar behaviour to other women over the years, P.E.I. provincial court heard Wednesday.

Gregory Dwight Campbell, 51, is being sentenced in Charlottetown for two counts of criminal harassment for repeatedly texting, phoning and following a woman. The victim cannot be identified because of a court order.

On Wednesday, Crown prosecutor Valerie Moore submitted written statements from two women who had relationships with Campbell years ago.

Both women wrote that Campbell sent them harassing letters, e-mails, phone calls and texts after the relationships ended.

Moore told the court this new evidence shows Campbell's actions last summer were part of an ongoing pattern.

"This was not low end criminal harassment," Moore told the judge. "The vitriol and vulgarity is shocking."

The court has heard audio of a profanity-laced voicemail message Campbell left for his victim last year.

The Crown also told court Campbell sent his victim nearly 300 text messages in June and July last year, in addition to following her to work and hanging around her neighbourhood.

Defence lawyer Peter Ghiz has unsuccessfully opposed the introduction of the new evidence from the two women. Ghiz told the court the incidents took place years ago and should have no influence on Campbell's sentence.

Court also heard Campbell contacted one of the women a few months ago, asking her to say good things about him in court.

According to Moore, the woman texted back, "You want me to help you look innocent? I was a victim too."

Campbell was the vice-principal at Stonepark Intermediate School. The school board says he is now on leave.

Campbell faces up to six months in jail. The Crown is asking for three to four months in jail not house arrest
plus probation, and potentially a DNA order and firearms prohibition.

The sentencing hearing is scheduled resume Wednesday, April 20.
