Ottawa to spend $1M on central P.E.I. fishing harbours

The government of Canada will spend $1 million on improvements to three fishing harbours includingMalpeque, P.E.I., area MP Wayne Easter announced Monday.

The money will be spent completing the reconstruction of a pier at French River, dredging the channel at Malpeque Cove and completing dredging of the channel and harbour basin at Nine Mile Creek.

"I'm really proud to announce this major investment for the commercial fishing infrastructure in Prince Edward Island," Easter said in a written release.

"The work carried out will not only renew and maintain the infrastructure that is essential to the region, but also stimulate job opportunities that will benefit fishermen and support our municipalities."

The mandate of the Small Craft Harbours Program is to keep harbours critical to the commercial fishing industry open and in good repair, the release noted, adding Ottawa plans to spend $289 million this year on small craft harbours across the country.
